Men’s Sheds are a modern version of the shed in the backyard that has long been a part of the Australian culture. Traditionally, this is where men retreat to when they need time to themselves so they can think and / or create. Each Men Shed provides opportunity for men to contribute to each other and to their communities through learning, sharing skills, making friends and participating in Men Shed projects. Many men may not have the resources or skills to set up their own shed. Your local Men Shed can provide an opportunity to use a variety of equipment, learn new skills and expand your network of friends.

Our shed’s objects:

  • to promote the advancement of men’s health by preventing or alleviating social isolation.
  • to create an inclusive environment for men to meet, create projects, learn, teach, and support each other, and enjoy the support of the working environment.
  • for members to develop, redevelop or learn new skills which will enhance their self-esteem, and in turn provide a positive impact upon their lives, their family and the community.

Our Mission:

To enjoy each other’s company, promote self-worth and work ethics, while developing and sharing skills for the benefit of both the individual and the community. Enabling men, from many social and ethnic backgrounds to mix and learn. It’s a place for men of all ages getting together, sharing fellowship and discovering the satisfaction of creation through the hands, and in turn changing the perception of the mind.

Our shed has various activities but mostly wood working and gardening. We can make most things for people upon request simply drop us a line and let us know what you are looking for.

Since our beginning in 2012 Jurien Bay Community Men’s Shed has become the “go to” organisation for other groups, business and individuals who need a job done, something made or just some volunteers to help out.

There are many projects and services carried-out by the men’s shed on behalf of the community, local businesses or to fund-raise for the shed and other worthwhile causes. We also have special interest groups, including musicians.

The facilities, equipment and tools at the shed are available for our shed projects and to members for their personal projects. These may be wood, metal and/or mechanical.

From an initial founding membership of just 8, over the past 10 years we’ve grown to over 60 registered members, and a shed that is the envy of many.

Our shed currently has around 170 members plus another 30 lady associate members, so in total around 200. These include a number of disabled members whom we encourage to join but we insist on those people having carers where applicable. For some time now we have also encouraged lady associate members who do not meet with the men but usually meet of an afternoon after the men have left, and do their own thing such as sewing, making toys etc. The ladies cannot vote or be on the committee and therefor pay a reduced annual membership fee. They are then covered by our insurance for accidents etc, and are free to use the tools in the shed once they have been tested as capable to do so (same as for the men).

Our shed makes toys for sale at local markets and we also have a large BBQ trailer which we can take to local venues, in particular our local Bunnings store. We also collect cans and bottles for recycling.

We provide members with diverse activities which includes wood work, metal work, wooden toy making, gardening, some furniture restoration (this needs to be approved by us first). We are prepared to look at any projects that we have the capability to make. In the past this has included possum boxes, kennels for the Police and a number of other items for both clubs and schools in the area.
